Hunting DVD Reviews

High-Tech Red-Necks “Night Vision Predators” DVD.

DVD2001-2Tbminus.jpgJoin Kevin aka High Tech Red Neck and friends on 17 successful NV hunts for coyotes and foxes in West Central IL.  If you’re contemplating jumping into the night time hunting scene but are a little hesitant to make that initial NV investment……well this is an inexpensive way to learn the ins and outs.

DVD running time is approximately 2.5 hours including 30 minutes devoted to introducing you to the tricks and techniques Kevin uses to successfully take more active night-time predators.  Kevin also shares the steps and procedures necessary to get the most out of your High Tech Red Neck Signature Series Scope.

On Target – When I was first contacted by Kevin to take a look at his DVD I was very intrigued. I’ve heard of people night hunting with infrared spot lights, etc but not with tactical infrared scopes or as Kevin calls them, high quality generation 3 night vision devices.  These are the same devices that the Armed Forces uses.  Pretty cool huh.  What better way to extend my hunting hours.   Once I received the DVD and got to watch it I began to understand how much Kevin has put into this style of hunting.   He has really perfected the “High Tech Red Neck night hunting.”  He has done the research and has put in the hunting hours to fine tune this new breed of predator hunting.

Off Target - I realized after a few minutes of watching the DVD that it was either self edited or done on a low budget. Understandable when your trying to break into the hunting DVD market.  I also realize that when your filming at night you’re never going to get the quality that you want.  Some of the hunts were tough to see and very grainy.  Another portion of the video that I thought needed some help was the instruction segments.  They were drawn out. I think if shot differently they could of been a little more informative and not so stagnant.  Other than that, I thought the DVD was really entertaining and it helped me to learn more about this newly awakened style.  Now, if you can afford a High Quality generation 3 night vision scope then go out and have you some fun.

Harvest Time 2 – DVD

harvesttimeb.jpg

For every serious deer hunter out there, time and planning must be invested in the off season to create an encounter with a monster during the fall. A lot of preparation goes into begin successful, from planting food plots, setting out trail cameras, glassing fields and setting up potential intercept points. You will get an opportunity to see how determining your own plans can pay off big time in your everyday life. Follow the Team Harvest boys through their second season as they put their summer plans into action.

On Target - First off, I like the fact that the Team Harvest boys involve our great lord in everything they do. God bless you guys.  Secondly, they really knock down some great bucks and not to mention some really cool footage. This video is packed with some exciting hunts.  It kind of has that raw home video feel but yet they are capturing it professionally and putting it together nicely in the post editing.

Off Target – If I was to critique anything about the DVD it would start with the store bought jumpback transitions.  I’ve never been a fan of the “included transition or background effects” or the “already made effects you can buy”. What I’m getting at is that I like to see editors use their own creations for transitions, effects, DVD authoring, etc. Other than that I think the guys put together a nice DVD with quality footage and kills.

BUCK COMMANDER DVD

Buck Commander takes you on a ride unlike anything you have ever experienced! From big bucks to Duckmen turned deer hunters, this video has it all. Join Willie Robertson and the Buckmen as they pursue their passion for hunting in a way that has never before been captured. This truly is a DVD for any huntin nuts library. I’m a big fan of showing things how they REALLY happen as you’ve probably noticed in some of my production work. This DVD does just that. The Buck Commander crew shows you the true meaning of having a good time. There’s no stiffs in this video.

On target - First off, I’d like to say great job to the production staff. This DVD was nicely put together, very professional. Secondly, I’d like to add that the Buck Commander crew members were very entertaining. I felt like I was actually getting to know the guys and I really like the fact that they were being themselves. Although, this DVD was packed with kills which is what most hunters want I found myself really enjoying the footage in between. Can’t wait to see what they do next.

Off target - Heck, this is tough. I am going to have to go with something that is merely an opinion. I am a bow hunter and I would of like to see more bow action but I can safely say that even this rowdy crew makes rifle hunting a blast to watch.

If your burnt out on watching hunting DVD’s and in the mood for a something outside of the ordinary then I command you to grab the new DVD from Buck Commander. I’m looking forward to season 2. www.buckcommander.com

Pronghorn Productions “The Big Game DVD”

This video was taped primarily in the ‘05/’06 season,it includes 2 black bear hunts from northern WI. A couple of turkey hunts from south western WI. and some whitetails also sw WI. Keeping in mind it’s our first attempt and a little rough around the edges……….but it’s 100% Fair chase and 100% real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Target- First off, I like the effort. It’s tough for the average Joe to produce a full length DVD and market it while trying to compete with the big dogs. (REALTREE, PRIMOS) Not everyone has the big sponsors and budgets to put the necessary dollars into a top notch production.

The DVD is an over the shoulder look at normal guys hunting, self taught camera work, and basic editing. Nothing fancy here. It is always nice to see a natural hunt without all the flashy graphics and overwhelming music.

Off Target- Again, I hate critiquing newcomers to the industry. I think Pronghorn hits the nail on the head when they say “Keep in mind it’s our first attempt and a little rough around the edges”. Hey, you have to start somewhere.

I think on their future DVD’s I would like to see a shorter open and not show every animal that is in the DVD. Also, I would work on the camera work and get it a little steadier. A few hunts I thought I was going to need some Dramamine for the motion sickness.

If your looking for something a little more real and not so much Hollywood check out Pronghorn Productions DVD’s. www.pronghornproduction.com

Full Moon Productions “The Ride”

Take another ride with the FMP team as they are put on a mission. With twenty five thousand dollars on the table, they’ll have to enter the Utah high country and harvest the illusive mule deer. One ultimate goal, out smart the opponent. Man’s mind against Animal’s. With many exciting mule deer hunts, a moose harvest and bonus footage of a single coyote taking down a young buck, just feet from the hunter and cameraman.

On Target – Have you ever watched a movie where you’re following a characters life and all the sudden you bounce to the characters past and then back to the present? This is sort of the pattern FMP is taking in their outdoor filming meets the cinema production style. I like the fact that they are doing something different and thinking outside the box. Not to many outdoor productions do this. I think they did a good job on giving you that big screen movie feel.

Off Target – I’m not one to harp on someone trying to go outside the norm. Personally, that’s what I strive to do. I will say this though. I was a little disappointed in that when you start watching the video it feels like a movie but when they go to a hunt it is filmed just like any hunt is filmed on the Outdoor Channel. I would of thought they could of given the hunts more of a movie feel. It felt like I was switching the channel from a mobster movie to a Sunday afternoon hunting show.

Realtree’s “All-Stars of Spring XIII”

The Realtree Team has set the bar even higher with this latest edition of the most popular turkey hunting videos ever offered. All-Stars of Spring XIII packs all the action you’ve come to expect and more into 27 exciting hunts.

Watch as Bill Jordan, Michael Waddell, David Blanton and friends use old tactics and new tricks to score big on toms across seven states in North America.

On target- The Realtree crew does it again. They are almost perfect in every aspect when it comes to providing the viewer with great hunts, close up action and solid camera work. The video was very well done. I like how they pumped up the natural sounds and didn’t add any unnecessary music. I really felt like I was right there with them.

Off target- Finding flaws in Realtree’s work is always tough but not tough enough. I had already seen Waddell’s hunts on his own show. Also, Jordan and Blanton’s boys had no excitement in them, and the bows were hardly brought out. I like the hunters to act as if they really enjoy the sport and I’d like to see the videos broken up with bow kills.

Primo’s The Truth 3 Bowhunting

You’ve got to love a DVD packed with nothing but bowhunting and Will and his team are the ones to pull it off every year.

-On Target- Bow hunting is what people want and a full DVD of nothing but is what you’ve got. The jokes and high spirits between the guys helps keep me watching when not much else is going on.

-Off Target- Now Will, do we have to see you and your boys on the porch every time? Those rockers have got to be getting old. And do you think you could fit maybe 3 or 4 more guys on the porch?

Outdoors with T.K. and Mike video series

T.K. and Mike were the pioneers of funny hunting videos. If you haven’t seen any of their videos I suggest you give them a shot. They are full of rib-tickling humor that any hunter can connect with.

-On Target- T.K. and Mike fit the parts. The low-end cheap production made the series that much better. It’s nice to see a team make it without spending tons of money and over-producing.

-Off Target-Mike’s partner, T.K. Browning, has passed on and it just won’t be same without him.

Realtree’s Monster Buck series

Bill Jordan has a solid background in the industry and knows a little about video production. He didn’t get where he’s at by letting bad products hit the shelves. If you started watching the Monster buck series when “Monster Bucks of North America” was released, you will see that they’ve come a long way.

-On Target- Bill has brought consistence to a whole new level. Each year, viewers can buy the Monster Buck videos and know that they are getting hours of well-put together whitetail hunts.

-Off Target- Over the years, the energy level from some hunters has decreased considerably. Some of the hunters seem to have ”oh, it’s just another deer.” mentality. On another note, I like Bill. He has done a lot for the hunting community. Though I don’t know how many more deer I can watch him kill or miss. Barbwire, stickers…I’ll quit there. Also, do you think we can have another 3D archery competition for the MBXV?

Whitetails “Taking it to the Extreme Series

The Kisky’s just plain and simple are in the playground of giant bucks. I would love to hunt in their backyard. Don and Kandy have assembled a good team of hunters and cameraman which results in some killer content.

-On Target- Location is always a plus, and we all know that the Kisky’s live in big buck country. The Catch-a-dream avenue is a great touch toward future productions.

-Off Target- Pretty much year after year we watch the same guys kill great bucks. I love watching big bucks go down but when you see Don smack 170’s every year it gets old. Try pulling out a recurve bow to bag a big buck Mix it up a little.
